Iniciačním okamžikem byla pro Tiago Cruze návštěva věhlasných přehlídek současného umění v Kasselu a Münsteru. Zaujetí estetikou současné sochařské tvorby, v níž však jen těžko tehdy dokázal rozlišovat její myšlenková východiska, přivedlo Cruze k její imitaci na pomezí nezdůvodnitelného obdivu a laskavé parodie. Ve svých posledních pracích tento přístup rozvíjí do formy soch, které mohou být instalačními materiály i uměleckým dílem, pokračujícím v současné tradici reformulace modernismu.
