The purpose of the performance, which the artist has called a “drumaquathèque,” was to mediate a musical experience for deaf people or for the hearing-impaired. A group of drummers used their music to vibrate the water in an inflatable pool. If one immersed one’s entire body in the water, one could feel the musical vibrations, resonating in and amplified by the water. Color spotlights completed the discothèque atmosphere. The drumaquathèque shows us a way of blurring the border between performance art and community work.
